Through the Lens of Basquiat: Exploring the Artist's Personal Photography Collection

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a force to be reckoned with in the art world of the 1980s. The graffiti artist turned painter broke boundaries and challenged norms with his unique style, vibrant colors, and thought-provoking imagery. While his life was tragically cut short at the age of 27, his legacy lives on, inspiring artists and art lovers around the world. Recently, rare photographs from Basquiat's personal life have surfaced in the collection of his former girlfriend, Kelle Inman, providing a glimpse into the personal life of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Still kicking with a furrowed brow, again in 1988.

Basquiat and Inman were romantically involved in the early 1980s, a time when Basquiat was gaining notoriety for his unique brand of art. Inman, a model and actress, was captivated by Basquiat's talent and free spirit. She would often accompany him to art shows and events, rubbing elbows with other artists and celebrities of the era.

Inman's personal collection of photographs, released in 2021, includes rare images of Basquiat at work in his studio, as well as candid shots of the couple together. The images offer a glimpse into Basquiat's world, revealing the man behind the art. In one photo, Basquiat can be seen working on a large canvas, paintbrush in hand, while in another, he is shown sitting on a couch with Inman, a book in his lap.

The photographs also capture the energy and excitement of the art scene in New York City in the 1980s. In one image, Basquiat is shown at a party, surrounded by fellow artists and celebrities, including Andy Warhol. In another, he is seen posing with the musician and artist, Debbie Harry.

For art lovers, the release of these photographs is a rare treat. Basquiat was notoriously private, and very few images of him exist outside of his art. Inman's collection provides an intimate look into his personal life, giving us a deeper understanding of the man behind the art.

But the release of these photographs is also significant in another way. Inman has stated that she hopes to use the collection to raise awareness about the impact of mental illness, a cause that was very important to Basquiat.

Basquiat struggled with addiction and depression throughout his life, and his untimely death is often attributed to his struggles with these issues. Inman hopes that by sharing these images, she can shed light on the importance of mental health and help break down the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The release of these photographs is a testament to the enduring legacy of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Nearly 40 years after his death, he continues to inspire and captivate, pushing the boundaries of art and challenging us to see the world in a new way.
